Cub100 Party: Friday 16th December 2016

Cub Packs across the country gathered on Friday 16th December 2016 to mark the 100th birthday of Cub Scouts (originally Wolf Cubs). At 19.16hrs, the Cubs renewed their Cub Scout Promise.

During the two hour Party, the Cubs played games, ate party food and had lots of fun with a magician and clown.

International badge

We've been working our way through the four modules needed for the International activity badge. It seemed a natural thing to do given our trip to France. This week, Tuesday 13th December was St Lucia's Day in - amongst other countries in some other similar forms - Sweden, so we held our own Light Festival at the end of the meeting. St Lucia is celebrated as a Saint because of her care and thoughfulness for the Christians hiding from persecution in the catacombs. As she wanted to carry as much food as possible, she wore her candles on her head to keep her hands free.
Sophie was our Saint Lucia (or Lucy) and once the Cubs had made their ceremonial candle holders, we walked around the green areas and they formed a candle and sparkler lit guard of honour for our Saint!

Remembrance Sunday

We were delighted to attend the service on Remembrance Sunday again this year. We had a biggest turnout in the five years since we re-opened. Well done Cubs and thank you for your support on such an important day.

Cub100 - take over of WASPS versus Newcastle Falcons

On 30th October we joined other Cubs from across Warwickshire at the Aviva Premiership match between WASPS and Newcastle Falcons (won by WASPS!). This was all part of our celebrations for the 100th year of Cub Scouts.

Our Adventures in France

We spent four days in France in October, leaving Wilmcote in the early hours on 24th and returning very late on 27th. What a tremendous 4 days we had! It's really hard to show in just a few photographs exactly what we got up to, but our adventures included a long day in Paris, an even longer day at Disneyland Paris, a trip to the WW1 site at Vimy Ridge and a great stay at a Chateau.

County Quiz

As West Warwickshire District Cub winners (see March 2016), a six Cub team took part in the County Quiz on Sunday and finished 4th in a very close top group. It was great to see them winning the mini-pioneering challenge round by a huge margin! Well done Alfie, Harry, Maria, Aimee, William and Olivia.

Teamwork throughout the Quiz was excellent and they were a credit to the Cub Pack.

Seven More Chief Scout Silver Awards!

We're proud of all the achievements of our Cub Scouts, but we always like to shout about it when they complete their Chief Scout Silver Award - the highest a Cub can get. This week, seven more were presented by our District Commissioner. So, "well done" Jessica (not in the picture), Fin, Alfie, Scarlett, Martha, Maddie and Annabel.

More Daffodil Bulbs Planted

Our Blog Post from September 2013 showed us planting lots of daffodil bulbs and we had added to those we'd planted in 2012. Well, we also planted quite a lot in 2014 and this week we added over 400 more! We can't wait until the Spring to see how its all looking.

Science in September

We gave the Cubs a choice of four Activity badges for September. The older Cubs led the decision making and the choice was the Scientist Activity badge. So, they've been jumping to launch rockets, experimenting with building, running to see what happens with their pulse and building a wormery each. With two experiments to go, we'll finish this badge by the first week in October.

Our meetings in July

We've used the outdoors as much as possible this month and have done a variety of activities. One week, each Six made a Scarecrow; another week we repeated our Backwoods cooking activity of making stews (which allowed some new ones to have a go) and then we ended the month with a couple of weeks of games - including water ones on the hottest day of the year so far!

Anabel Murphy's Racing Stables

For our meeting after the Camp weekend, we had an interesting visit to Wilmcote's horse racing yard! It is owned and run by Anabel Murphy and we heard lots about the world of horse racing, how the horses are cared for and trained and how they all have different personalities. We also congratulated Mrs Murphy on her win at Royal Ascot this year. The parents who came along found it interesting too (plus one or two tips were discussed....).

Camp100

Wow! what a weekend we all had from 17th to 19th June 2016 at the Heart of England Showground near Meriden. We joined 1200 other Cubs and their Leaders for a full weekend of activities. The Cubs had lots of choice. And we mean lots! Amongst other things they made themselves into French Citizens for the Opening Ceremony Parade, built shelters, ate bugs, learnt how to make fire without matches, climbed, canoed, rowed, jumped, shot (archery, shooting and nerf guns), made lots of things, danced, played steel drums ... plus other things that they are still remembering! Here's just a few photographs of a truly memorable weekend:

Getting ready for this year's Camp

We have two Practise Camps recently to get us ready for the County Cub100 Camp in just a few days time! Everyone has had a chance to camp at our our meeting place for the night, so we're now ready for the big weekend. Just four days to go!

Local Knowledge badge

We have been out walking for the last two meetings - finding out more about Wilmcote and how the village has grown. In particular we walked to two of the old Quarries to see where the stone came from. Perhaps we saw the very spot where the stone for the floor of the Houses of Parliament was cut from!

Mini Pioneering Challenge

It looks a bit like another fire layout; actually it was a mini pioneering challenge and was part of the Adventure Challenge Award. The Cubs were asked to build a frame, put a base on it off the ground and light a mini beacon fire to go on it. Here's Luke, William and Jack doing their challenge. As our youngest Cubs, they did really well!

Backwoods Cooking

The main badge activity in April was our preparation and badge night for Backwoods Cooking. The Cubs had to cook something in a pot (they made a stew), on a stick (a sausage then marshmallows) and in foil (baked banana with chocolate). Great fun!
